Holiday Hoops

In its second year, Joshua High School once again hosted the highly anticipated Holiday Hoops event. Last year’s turnout was incredible, with half of the student body showing up to support their school.

It was such a hit that it was only natural to bring it back this year. While many came to witness the fierce competition between the different teams, some students saw it as a chance to take a break from their classes and enjoy a few hours of pure basketball excitement.

The gymnasium echoed with the sounds of the half student body, creating an electrifying atmosphere even before the games began. The teams faced their own unique challenges in preparing for the games. The noise from the crowd was so ear-splitting loud that it was hard to hear oneself think. But amidst the chaos, the teams carried on and practiced relentlessly during the practice rounds. These rounds allowed each team to improve their skills and strategies before the real showdown began.

Once the games started, the intensity was noticeable. Every player gave their all, their faces turning red and sweat dripping down their faces. Each team was determined to win, their competitive spirits shining through their focused intense glares. However, in the end, only one team could emerge victorious.

One team, known as the “MONSTARS,” “had their eyes set on winning first place and total domination,” teacher and softball coach Ashley Benson said.

Her motivations for joining the games was to support the Joshua Basketball Programs, to embrace the thrill of competition.

“Our strategy to win involved precise passing, strategic cuts, and getting the ball to Coach Allen,” Benson said. They chose their team name, MONSTARS, with a clear purpose in mind “To raise the competitive level of the event,” Benson said. The Monstars aimed to showcase their skills and prove themselves as formidable opponents to the Tune Squad. “This time the MONSTARS defeat the Tune Squad #Space Jam Showdown,” Benson said.

The second annual Holiday Hoops event promised to be an unforgettable display of talent, determination, and teamwork. Next year is sure to be equally impressive.

Briana Gibbens
Briana Gibbens, Reporter
Briana Gibbens is your typical teenage girl. She likes to be at home and she doesn’t like going to school. She would rather spend her time in her room reading books or being alone and sleeping. Briana usually refers to herself as “queen” as a joke because she likes royalty books and she grew up wanting to be a princess, but in reality, Gibbens knew that her dream would never come true but deep down. She still hopes she prays that she can be one. She loved reading princess books and royalty books when she was younger.  Those books are the whole reason why she’s so obsessed with reading any type of book. But she doesn’t pick up a book at school because she never has the time to read it but when she’s home that’s all she’s doing reading a book and she’s not on her phone or doing what her parents ask her to do. Briana's most treasured possession is her books because without them, she could never have the wild imagination that she has. She wouldn’t be the Briana that we know.
